Types of benefits

Wages

Workers compensation provides weekly payments to cover lost wages if you are unable to work due to your workplace injury or illness, ensuring some financial stability during your recovery.

The legislation provides a schedule for payments as follows:

  • 95% of your pre-accident wage for the first 13 weeks after your accident.

  • 80% of your pre-accident wage for the ensuing 117 weeks after your accident.

  • If you are still unfit for work after this period, you may apply for an extension for payment of wages up to a maximum of a further 130 weeks.

  • If you are still unfit for work after this period, you must attain the necessary impairment assessment from a doctor to continue to receive wage benefits for an indefinite period up to the age of retirement.

Medical expenses

You are entitled to payment of all reasonable and necessary medical treatment expenses related to your injury or illness. This includes all doctors visits, therapy, specialist consultations, hospital stays, and surgery fees for a period of 2 years.

You must attain the necessary impairment to receive medical expenses beyond this period.

Lump sum for pain and suffering

You may be entitled to a one-time lump sum payment to compensate you for the lasting impact on your life.

To qualify, you must be assessed with a whole person impairment (WPI) of above 10% for physical injuries and a WPI of 15% or more for psychological injuries.

Each percentage has an attached value and the total figure is indexed each year.
